The Soldier’s Promise

image

“Goodbye my love, I promise I will be back.”

Those were the last words he said to her,

As he picked up his heavy bag and walked out of their home,

To fight a war that would never end,

His back fading in the distance is the only memory she has of him,

Awaiting the day when the little shadow in the distance will grow,

And show her his face once more,

His words on a letter of old paper give her hope,

In the midst of death that surrounds her home,

She sits on the porch every morning,

Sits under the tree every afternoon,

And in front of her mirror every night counting,

Counting the new wrinkles that appear every month,

Each with a story to tell,

Of how she faced the world each day,

Through rain and sunshine,

Leaving a dough of fresh bread each morning,

Awaiting his return to her arms once more,

To her warmth and bed,

Seconds,

Turn into

Hours,

Turning into

Days,

Years,

She still sits under the shade,

Smiling at a letter in her hand,

Of a youth she once knew,

She never gives up hope,

And every evening she lights up a candle to show him the way back home to her heart,

For in her heart he finds peace and a home,

The wind blows her hair,

Dust and leaves following the wind,

In the distance she sees a shadow,

Her heart stops beating,

And in that moment she feels his heartbeat,

And she smiles,

When she knows,

He kept his promise …
